  • Footprints Waipoua Twilight Encounter

Pay for one person, the second goes FREE!
Discount voucher included with all rentals.

More Information on the Twilight Encounter
Setting out from Hokianga by coach, your Maori guide will brief you on the protocols for your visit to the mighty Waipoua Forest. Stepping into our special world you will be walking under the same stars that guided our ancestor Kupe from legendary Hawaiiki to New Zealand. On the paths of the forest we meet trees that were already giants before his arrival and that were standing before the birth of Christ.

You will experience the affinity that early Maori had with the forest and the deep spiritual respect they hold for the giants still growing there. Learn of the rich bird life and other fauna that inhabits the forest and witness the transitions of life and the day turning into the night.

Your Maori guides will relate stories and legends of the forest, of its gods, and other spiritual inhabitants. They will greet the giant trees with spine-tingling waiata (sacred chants). You will learn how Maori used plants for medicinal purposes.

As night falls, the shyest creatures of the forest awaken and begin to go about their work. You may encounter insects like weta, nocturnal birds, eels, fresh-water lobsters or the magnificent but slightly chilling giant carnivorous 'kauri' snail.

Deep in the forest among the towering trees and surrounded by the sounds of the nocturnal creatures awakening, you will meet Te Matua Ngahere - 'The Father of the Forest'. At between 3000 and 4000 years old he is the oldest known kauri tree in the world. Your guide will greet this giant as an old friend.

The highlight of the tour will be your meeting with 'The Lord of the Forest' - the giant Tane Mahuta! Your guide will formally greet the silent giant and then suddenly you stand dwarfed before his Lordship as the darkness closes in. His gnarled ancient limbs seem to grasp at the stars and the forest is silent but for the dim chatter of its night creatures.

At the conclusion of this unique encounter you will be returned to your accommodation in the Hokianga.

More Information on the Dive! Experience
Dive! Tutukaka is New Zealand's premier full-service dive charter operator, servicing the Poor Knights Islands; "the best sub-tropical diving in the world". Dive! Tutukaka delivers a total experience and run trips out to the Poor Knights Islands all year round. Report time is 8am in Tutukaka and return at 4pm in the afternoon.

Diving at the Poor Knights is rewarding at all times of the year. Mid January to late April presents excellent all round diving. The water is warm 20-23 Celsius (70F) and the water is clear averaging 20 meters visibility. This is the summer season so you can expect mild air temperatures too.

From May to early September the visibility is excellent while the temperature falls to a winter low of 15-16 Celsius. Often calm periods of weather occur over this time and visibility in excess of 30 meters can be encountered.

Between September and early January the water is warming. Plankton can reduce visibility to as little as 10 to 15 meters at times. However there is a great abundance of fish during this time. The plankton feeders have a limitless source of food and of course the predators are here.

More Information on the Waiau Waterworks
The Waterworks, originally named Waiau Waterworks, was developed by Chris Oglivie on land that once was his father’s farm. Work commenced in 1989 by the Oglivie family, planting gardens from scratch, collecting cuttings from plants that locals had successfully grown over the years. An old miner’s cottage was brought all the way from Thames for the entrance building.

Chris got busy making water powered gadgets and in November 1993 Waiau Waterworks opened to the public. As the gardens matured they provided protection for the naturally growing native foliage and these plants are again prevalent as you walk around the Waterworks.

The park also provided Chris’s partner Kay an outlet for her pottery work; many of the sculptures that you’ll see at the Waterworks are Kay’s creations.

Current owners Jeff and Tatti moved to New Zealand from the U.K in 2007. They wanted to buy a sustainable tourism business in New Zealand and saw the Waterworks as a great opportunity. “It’s not your usual kind of fun park ... we love the fact that many people comment that they have never seen anything like it”, say Jeff and Tatti.

Jeff has a passion for food so has completely revamped the café! Tatti is originally from South America and is chief organiser of children’s birthday parties and incorporates traditions from her home country into the events.

More Information on Cathedral Cove Macadamias
Te Coromandel Peninsula is one of New Zealand’s premier tourist destinations, offering outstanding beaches, water sports, and wonderful local attractions, enjoyed by kiwis and thousands of inbound tourists alike. On a headland between Hahei and Cooks Beach you’ll find a ‘must visit’ local attraction, Cathedral Cove Macadamia Orchard, a commercially operated orchard since 2001. This summer the orchard has been extensively developed into a ‘sustainable eco - tourism destination’ with something for all age groups.

On site you’ll find a mobile café, enjoy fair-trade organic tea, coffee or cold drinks while you walk among the aromatic Nut trees, taking in the glorious views and the ever present warm sunshine. The sub tropical micro climate has enabled the commercial plantings of Macadamia trees, citrus trees, plus a great variety of native trees. There is also prolific Native bird life including Tui, Bell Bird & Kaka along with wild Turkeys, Quail, Peacocks, Pheasants, and Hawks. For those interested in the way the nuts are grown and harvested, there is a short film, or you can join in the orchard tour with one of the staff, who can hopefully answer any questions you or your children have!

At the orchard shop you can stock up the bach or campsite pantry with a healthy choice of locally grown seasonal and organic fruit and vegetables , fresh organic eggs, local seafood, plus a delicious range of Cathedral Cove Macadamia products, including natural nuts, dark chocolate coated macadamias, macadamia dukkah, museli, lemon kelp sprinkle (for coating & marinating local seafood such as scallops) and the very healthy macadamia nut oil, rich in omega 3 & 6 fatty acids and ideal for cooking locally caught fish, due to its very high smoke point and low cholesterol.

Close by are two world famous beaches, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. The township of Whitianga is a short drive away and historic Coromandel town is sixty minutes drive over the scenic Coromandel ranges. All this sensuous splendor, is just 2 hours drive from Auckland.

Our backgrounds are diverse; Stephen holds an Advanced Trade Certificate in Furniture Making and also a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Finance, while Kylee is a trained Secondary School Physical Education and Outdoor Education Teacher and Housemaster. We believe in setting and maintaining the highest standards in our personal and professional lives.

We both have a love for the outdoors and have both represented New Zealand in our chosen sports, Kylee in Softball as a member of the White Sox for twelve years and Stephen in Judo, representing New Zealand for five years. Another major achievement of Steve’s is finishing 35th in the 2001 Coast to Coast one day Multisport Race.

In 2002, we decided on a lifestyle change, acquiring an existing rafting company in September and began building our dream of operating the most professional Rafting Operation in NZ. We began by renaming and re-branding the company and to date we have replaced all vehicles and equipment with new top of the line equipment. We will continue to concentrate on human resource initiatives as well as reinvesting in the maintenance and upgrading of our plant.

We started our family in 2004 and now have three fantastic sons, Lachlan (2004), Wyatt (2006) and Sterling (2008), to share in our fun and adventures.

We have made history on three occasions, by opening a new section of the Lower Kaituna known as Awesome Gorge, by having the first on-water marriage proposal on a commercial Kaituna Rafting Excursion; and by becoming the first company to single guide the Kaituna River.

We remain the only company to have a private Kaituna River Base with full amenities and private access to the river.

We are 100% NZ owner /operated and are very hands-on, ensuring the consistency and quality of our products and services. We believe that our unique experiences concentrating on safety, customer service, professionalism and product development will ensure our continued growth in the adventure tourism industry.
